The Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), participated in the
Joint Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF),
which were held in Singapore during the period 19-20 September 2006. The Bank
delegation was headed by the Director General H.E. Mr. Abdelaziz Khelef.
BADEA's officials held a number of side-meetings with the delegates from African
countries, eligible for BADEA assistance, who attended the said meetings.
Discussions revolved around current joint activities and future cooperation
between African countries and BADEA, exploring all various means of promoting
and developing such cooperation.
Coordination between BADEA and the Arab Financing Institutions, in financing
projects and technical assistance operations in Sub-Sahara-African countries was
also discussed with the officials of these institutions. They expressed
satisfaction regarding the high degree of cooperation and coordination reflected
in the operations of the their institutions in providing assistance to the
beneficiaries countries. They reiterated their commitment to continuing the
drive toward promoting development and reaffirmed the commitment of their
institutions to assisting countries to realize the Millennium Development Goals.
Since its inception, BADEA has provided US$ 3144.222 million, to finance
projects and technical assistance operations in 43 non-Arab African countries.
The amount includes loans provided by SAAFA (Special Arab Aid Fund for Africa)
amounting to US $ 214.2 million, and the funds contributed to the Heavily
Indebted Poor Countries Initiative (HIPC).
