The Arab Bank for Economic Development in
Africa (BADEA), participated in the Roundtable meeting to finance Regional
Economic Programme (REP), of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA),
which was held in Dakar during the period 02-03 November 2006. The Bank
delegation was headed by the Director General H.E. Mr. Abdelaziz Khelef.
The opening session was addressed by
Senegalese President H.E. Mr. Abdoulaye Wade. President Wade expressed his
gratitude to the role of the International and Regional Finance Institutions and
their contributions in the economic development efforts in West African Economic
and Monetary Union countries.
During this meeting, donors have agreed to
finance the five-year Regional Economic Programme (REP) (2006-2010) of the
eight-nation West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA).
BADEA's officials held a number of
side-meetings with delegations from African countries, eligible for BADEA
assistance, who attended the said meeting. Discussions revolved around current
joint activities and future cooperation between African countries and BADEA,
exploring all various means of promoting and developing this cooperation.
During his stay in Dakar, the Director
General, attended the closing session of the training program financed by BADEA
in the field of Coordination and Economic Integration that was conducted by IDEP,
the closing session was chaired by H.E. ABDELAZIZ SOW the Minister of NEPAD and
Economic Integration in Senegal. 20 participants from African Union Commission
and Regional Economic Organizations operating in Africa benefited from this
training program.
It is to be noted that since its inception,
BADEA has provided US$ 800 million to finance projects and technical assistance
operations in West African Economic and Monetary Union countries which include
Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and
Togo. The total Arab Financing Institutions aid to this group of countries,
including BADEA's assistance, has reached US$ 4 billion until end 2005.
