Project’s Name:

Marangu - Tarakea - Kamonaga Road Project (Phase I Tarakea- Rombo Mku).

BADEA’s Financing:

A loan of US $ 9.6 million, to be repaid over a period of 30 years, including a grace period of 10 years, and an annual interest rate of 1%.

Other Co- financiers:

Government (US $ 2.4 million).

Estimated Project Cost:

The total project cost for the complete road is estimated at US $ 36 million out of which US $ 28.4 million is in foreign currencies. For (Phase I) which will be financed by BADEA, the total cost is estimated at 12 million, out of which US $ 9.40 million is in foreign currencies.

Project Description:

The project includes the construction of an asphalted road for an average length of 96 Km with an average width of 6 meters and two shoulders 0.5 meter each, in addition to stormwater drainage structures and bridges on crossing rivers and flood plains. Due to the intense population in the project area, the road design will include sidewalks in some area on one side or on both sides and construction of bus stops where the road crosses commercial areas.

In order to facilitate financing procedures, the road has been divided into two sections;

First Section: for an average length of 32 Km and consists of two sections, the first (Tarakea-Rombo Mkuu for an average length of 29 Km) and the second (Rombo Mkuu- junction to District Head Quarter for an average length of 3Km), to be financed by BADEA and Government.

Second Section: for an average length of 64 Km and consists of three section:
- Rombo Mukuu- Mwika- Marangu for an average length of 20 Km,
- Mwika- Kilacha for an average length of 12 Km,
- Tarakea- Rongai- Kamwanga for an average length of 32 Km,

To be financed by NORAD and Government.

Both Sections of the project consists of:

A. Civil Works:
- Execution of earth works (Excavation- Backfilling- Grading) and base layers from gravel and crushed stones
- Execution of stormwater drainage structures and flood plains,
- Execution of asphalt layer,
- Execution of Safety structures and traffic signs and fixing traffic safety facilities.
B. Land Acquisition

C. Utilities Diversion (water, Electricity, Telephones)

D. Consultancy Services:
Includes consultancy services for review of tender documents, assisting the executing agency in the evaluation of offers and supervision of construction.

Procurement of Goods and Services:

The execution of Civil works for the fisrt section of the road on the basis of competitive bidding limited to Arab, African or Arab-African firms subject to BADEA’s modality and in coordination with the Government. Procurement of the consultancy services for the first section shall be obtained through competitive bidding restricted to short-listed firms limited to Arab, African or Arab-African subject to BADEA’s procedures and in coordination with the Government.

Project’s Implementation:

Physical implementation of the project is expected to begin in June 2005 and ends in June 2007. Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) will be responsible for the implementation of the project.
