Social Impact Projects - June 2023
In BADEA’s 2030 strategy, the focus on social impact is not just a goal but a cornerstone of many of our impactful interventions. As a catalyst for transformation, BADEA offers diverse financial instruments, including sovereign loans and capacity-building grants, to foster sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In June 2023, our Board of Directors approved nine significant transactions across West, Central, and East Africa. These operations aim to provide clean water to rural areas in Mauritius and empower young girls with quality education in Niger.
BADEA’s long list of strategic interventions in the social sector is effectively shaping a brighter future for African communities. We invite you to join us as we continue to make meaningful changes through innovative and sustainable solutions.
The Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA) - December 2023
The flagship initiative of the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA) was officially unveiled during COP28 under the visionary leadership of the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank Group, and Africa50. BADEA joined these strategic forces to address the critical environmental challenges of infrastructure development while mitigating the impacts of climate change.
With a collective pledge of USD 175 million, including a substantial commitment of USD 40 million from BADEA, AGIA has embarked on a mission to combat climate change through resilient infrastructure private sector investment. This initiative is set to mobilize up to USD 10 billion in private capital, addressing Africa’s green infrastructure gap and propelling sustainable development across the continent. We invite you to join us in shaping the future of Africa’s infrastructure landscape. Together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable tomorrow.
Resilient Infrastructure and Inclusive Societies - November 2023
Ahead of COP28, we joined our strategic partner the Arab Coordination Group (ACG) initiative of Resilient Infrastructure and Inclusive Societies, which has a substantial total commitment of up to USD 50 billion. The flagship programme aims to bolster infrastructure resilience and promote inclusivity in African societies through strategic investment and collaborative efforts.
The funding will be tunnelled to tackle several critical areas, including energy security and transition, regional integration and connectivity, trade facilitation and women and youth empowerment. Additionally, it will prioritize supporting fragile states, enhancing development effectiveness, stimulating private sector investment and addressing challenges related to food security, poverty and unemployment.
Social and Climate Change Projects in Africa - July 2023
The Social and Climate Change Projects in Africa initiative aims to support impactful environmental projects to address climate change in Africa and narrow the development gap, aligning closely with BADEA’s 2030 Strategy, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s 2063 Agenda.
Among the recent approvals are four public sector projects and three capacity development grants totalling USD 110.765 million (65 billion FCFA), spanning five countries and the Sahel region. These projects focus on climate change adaptation, clean water, agricultural land development, infrastructure, and financial services development.
A new trade finance facility worth USD 50 million was also approved under the trade finance window. This facility aims to support a key state-owned company in Burkina Faso, facilitating the importation of strategic commodities from Arab and African countries and promoting intra-African trade and trade exchanges between the two regions.
These approvals signify BADEA’s unwavering commitment to fostering sustainable, inclusive and environmentally conscious African economies.
Africa Food Security - June 2022
This initiative aims to enhance food security in African nations, specifically focusing on mitigating the impacts of global inflation. It intends to do so by facilitating the import of strategic goods and production inputs while prioritizing environmental considerations over the medium and long term. Additionally, the initiative aims to improve the productivity of the agricultural sector.
To realize these objectives, BADEA has pledged the substantial sum of USD 1 billion. This funding will be crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges of achieving food security across short, medium and long-term horizons.
By investing in sustainable agricultural practices and promoting resilience in the face of global economic fluctuations, BADEA aims to significantly contribute to ensuring food security and fostering socioeconomic stability in African countries. Its focus on sustainable initiatives will help create a more equitable and prosperous future for African communities.
